Welcome Home, Buffy!

She's home! She seems like her usual self with all her boundless energy and prankster attitude. What a difference from when I visited her in the hospital last night.

What I've learned from this experience:

* restlessess, excessive drinking, gulping air, and a bloated appearance around the waistline are the first signs of "food engorgement" that can lead to bloat, which is oftentimes deadly
* bloat cannot be treated with home remedies - get your dog to an animal hospital immediately
* do not feed your dogs rawhide, pigs' ears, or those Gr*eenies - they can all cause an obstruction in the bowel
* give your dog M*lkbone type treats, and brush its teeth yourself or have its teeth brushed by a professional (sans anethesia)

Lastly, I have to give some credit to the book Marley & Me which I'd read about a year ago. In the book, Marley had had an episode with bloat, and it was this background knowledge that helped me realize that I was dealing with a serious issue yesterday morning.

Take good care of your pets. Be their advocate!

    Joannah,

I'm so glad that Buffy has recovered and is home!! I'll definitely be on the lookout for symptoms of bloat since I have a great big Labrador too! I heard about not feeding the Greenies to dogs, but I didn't know about the rawhide or pig's-ear treats. Thanks for all of the helpful and life-saving information!!! I don't know what I'd do if I lost my sweet Guinness!

ps... What a gorgeous smile on Buffy's face!

Yep, I will never give my dog rawhides or bones. My sister worked at vet clinic and saw waaaay too many pooches in trouble from bones and those chews. I'm so glad that Buffy is better and at home. Hooray! We love our animals here too!

Thank God Buffy is home and healthy. What a terrible ordeal for both of you. I read the book Marly and me after Molly died. It's great for dog lovers.

How scary Joannah! I'm so glad Buffy is home, safe and sound.

I've had a week with my own fur child. It's too bad they can't speak and tell us where it hurts.

Kudos to you, you're a quick thinking mommy. I'm glad to hear that Buffy is doing well. Thanks for the info on bloat - I've heard of it, but never knew that rawhide could cause an obstruction. Good to know.

BTW, we have two yellow labs & Buffy looks like our Jade. Aren't they the sweetest.

Joannah, I'm just catching up and so sorry to hear about Buffy's troubles lately. She's looks so happy to be back home. My yellow, Bailey, is a binge eater and I've been through that *twice* with her when she's gotten into her food bin(eek)! Mine are serious rawhide eaters though. How do your dogs entertain themselves without something like that to chew on? Bailey will play with toys for awhile but then just follow me and give me the "look" that means I need food and now please! I'm afraid her rawhide treats are more habit for her and a "babysitter" for me. Any suggestions? (sorry to write a novel here!)

I am happy to hear you recognized the signs early though because this is a fatal situation that so many owners don't know about.
