Snorkeling in Paradise

Early yesterday morning we drove to the end of the road here in Kauai. You can't drive all the way around the island. The road dead ends at Haena State Park and Ke'e Beach. It was already busy by the time we got there because there was a canoe race going on, and many spectators (and photographers) were on the beach to cheer their teams on. Nevertheless, we found a parking spot and got in the water.

The water here was so calm, it was like being in a pool. The reef is close to shore and this makes for some excellent snorkeling in well-lit water. Within a few yards from the shore, we were swarmed by some larger fish who I'd say were well acquainted with snorkelers. They seemed to know that we'd brought fish food with us, and they were determined to get their fair share. One of them bit my finger! Little bugger...

The fish here are amazing! So many sizes and shapes. They are magnificently colored, too. I just kept thinking about God's creativity as I encountered each new and beautiful creature.

On the beach we observed all the roosters, hens, and baby chicks that also knew little fear of humans. Should one leave food on the beach, they were all over one's belongings rooting around for the food. This island is crawling with chickens and roosters!

We spent the rest of the day playing cards and napping. In the evening, Dad treated us to a nice dinner out at a nearby restaurant on the Hanalei Heritage River. We all enjoyed our fish dinners and mai tais. Yum!

Only 72 more hours in paradise. Sigh...

Oh, I am dying of jealousy here! I'm in a potty training nightmare. The only thing I'm looking at in the water is baby poo!
